CANADIAN RED CROSS SEEKING MORE DISASTER VOLUNTEERS
Winter is a busy season for Canadian Red Cross volunteers who help people displaced by residential fires or are impacted by other disruptive events like ice or wind storms, prolonged power outages, storm surges and flash floods, so the organization is hoping to recruit more volunteers in all areas of the four Atlantic provinces.
Basic requirements include being at least 19 years old, having a valid driver's licence, a clear criminal reference check, completing first aid and other specialized disaster training that the Red Cross provides at no charge, and agreeing to be available to help 24 hours a day on a rotating schedule.
While some Red Cross volunteers opt to respond only to events in or near their home community, many also deploy to larger-scale events elsewhere in their province or across Canada. Recent examples include deployments to support evacuees of this past summer's record forest fires in British Columbia or the 2016 wildfire evacuation of Fort McMurray, Alberta.
Additional details and instructions for applying are available online at redcross.ca/volunteer.
